Wakefield Ladies’ Hockey – Saturday 5th December

Ladies Hockey – Saturday 5th December 2015

Newcastle University 1  Wakefield 2nds  1

Wakefield survived a difficult test against a hard working University team. The visitors were slow to start and found themselves defending the first of a series of penalty corners in the opening minute. Thanks to keeper, Becky Hague the students couldn’t find the net. However, they broke the deadlock soon after. They thought they had added a second at another penalty corner but it was disallowed as the ball had never left the D before the first shot. Wakefield rallied for a brief period but found it difficult to keep possession and ended the half trailing by the solitary goal.

In the second half Wakefield came close to equalising when Tilly Morgan broke away. One on one with the keeper her shot was parried. The students kept the pressure on the Wakefield defence, but were thwarted by excellent goal keeping. Against the run of play Wakefield won their third penalty corner of the game and finally equalised through Alice Blades. Newcastle fought  hard to find a winning goal but ran out of time. Results elsewhere went Wakefield’s way keeping them 3 points clear at the top of North Division 1, with 1 game to play before the Christmas break. They play at Lymm on Saturday.
