After receiving a memo from YCGBA informing us of the latest developments, I just want to clarify that:
Wakefield Bowls Club greens are now CLOSED due to the virus.
We are insured on a joint PLI policy with Wakefield Sports Club, if anyone chooses to bowl after this instruction has gone out it will have consequences within the policy, so please heed the notice.
I will keep you updated as far as I am able
Please keep well. hope to see you all soon.
Wakefield Bowls Club was the first club to establish itself on this site, way back in 1847 and we have been ever present since. We have the use of two Crown Green Bowling Greens, one of which has floodlights, and between which is our Bowls Pavilion.
The Bowls Club currently have 2 functions organised as follows:
Sunday, April 5th 2020 at 7pm – Music and Fun Night – cost £7 per head
The evening consists of music by a Ukulele Band, Beetle Drive with hot roast meat bap.
Do join in the fun. Tickets obtainable from the Bar
Sunday May 17th 2020 at 7pm – Quiz Night with Pie and Pea Supper.
More details later. All welcome.
Any queries, contact Jenny Ward
Our Members enjoy both social and competitive bowling and we currently have teams in the following local Leagues:
- Ossett & Horbury (3 teams playing on Tuesday/ Thursday Evenings)
- Mirfield (1 team playing on Tuesday evenings)
- Leeds Half Holiday (1 team playing on Wednesday afternoons)
- Workshops (2 teams playing on Wednesday evenings)
- Wakefield (2 teams playing on Saturday afternoons)
- Wakefield Veterans (3 teams playing on Monday afternoons)
The Leagues also run individual and team competitions throughout the season (April to late September) which we participate in. Members enjoy social bowling throughout the week during the season (usually April to mid-October), outside league / cup matches, of course – although Sunday mornings have traditionally been the focal point for members to meet up.
Our membership is open to everyone of all ages and for those new to the sport, we have a number of qualified coaches. Free coaching is available on Sunday mornings or at other times by arrangement – please contact Sue Fielding our Secretary on 07948013352 or via email at (alternatively, telephone the Sports Club).
During the winter months, one of the bowling greens may be available to members – maintenance programmes permitting – although recently, we had had the use of one of the Astra Turf Hockey Pitches to practice on (at a small charge). Some find that great fun!
Recently, we have had mixed results in individual and team competitions, but remain ever hopeful of returning to winning ways in future years. We were though, winners of the Eric Hutchinson Cup in 2007. This is a prestigious annual knock-out team competition, run by the Yorkshire Crown Green Bowling Association – an amazing win by a small club like ours.
The Club also runs numerous internal competitions for members to compete in; including Ladies, Gents, Mixed and Pairs Competitions. These culminate towards the end of the season with a Finals Day and separate Presentation Lunch.
Recently, we introduced regular Whist Sessions to all comers. Occasionally, we hold Quiz Nights in the Sports Club’s Bar and on the first Wednesday of each month, Coffee Mornings are held in the Bowls Pavilion; once again open to all.
We are constantly looking to extend our social activities. Why not come along and join us? – please contact our Secretary, or speak to anyone you see bowling on the Green. You will be most welcome. Some may think bowls is just for ‘old fogies’ – it isn’t!
